Palm Springs is known for sunshine, stylish resorts, and luxury. Yet one of the things that surprised me when I moved here is how little it costs to live and thrive in the area, once your accommodation is booked.

Speaking of accommodations: If you haven’t booked your accommodations, you will want to check out the Palm Springs Preferred Small Hotels website. The site has over 70 independently owned boutique hotels. They have fewer than 50 rooms and offer a more personal, themed experience than large resort properties.

Once you are settled into your accommodation, it becomes easy to fill your days with art, entertainment, outdoor adventures, and memorable moments without stretching your budget. In fact, some of my favorite Palm Springs experiences are completely free.

Start with a Stroll Through Downtown

Wander downtown, and you'll find charming, independently owned retail stores, outdoor dining patios, public art, and plenty of opportunities for people-watching. While you walk our wide sidewalks, keep an eye out for the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. More than 480 stars honor entertainers, civic leaders, and notable figures who enhanced our community.

The search for a favorite celebrity's star can easily turn into a leisurely afternoon of exploration, taking you past independently owned shops and seasonal sales that often appear as the warmer months approach.

Be sure to take the brief detour one block off Palm Springs Canyon into Museum Way. Here you will see our famous 25-ft-high Marilyn statue, tucked among the palm trees in our downtown park. There are benches and tables in the shade where you can have lunch or “just be” before continuing your journey in the area.

Throughout the year, downtown parks also host free concerts and community events. Listening to live music on a warm desert evening, with the mountains silhouetted against the night sky, is one of those simple pleasures that remind you why people fall in love with Palm Springs.

Thursday Nights Belong to VillageFest

If you're visiting on a Thursday afternoon and notice streets closing downtown, don't worry. Palm Springs is preparing for VillageFest, one of the city's most beloved traditions, with no admission fee.

In the middle of town, Palm Canyon Drive is closed, turning into a lively pedestrian market. With more than 180 vendors showcasing artwork, handcrafted goods, vintage treasures, jewelry, and unique gifts, you are bound to find a special item for yourself or a family member.

Music wafts through the air as you leisurely stroll. One evening, I stopped to listen to a young singer named Abi Carter. At the time, a talented performer was entertaining the crowd. Much to our community’s pride, later, she would go on to win American Idol.

At the north end of the festival, food vendors serve everything from Mexican specialties to other international cuisines. So, make your selection, head to one of the tables brought in specifically for the event, sit down, and you may be surprised to find you are talking to someone from another country. VillageFest is considered a must-do, at least once, if you are visiting Palm Springs.

Palm Springs on a Budget: Enjoying Art Without Paying Admission

Thursday evenings are also an excellent time to visit the Palm Springs Art Museum and its Architecture and Design Center. Both offer free admission from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Museum Way, the Palm Springs Art Museum stands majestically waiting for you to walk through the doors. While the permanent exhibit is extensive and rotated, the special exhibits are catching the attention of international visitors.

A journey to the museum’s gift shop is a must. You will find beautiful stationery, stunningly crafted jewelry, and fabulous mobiles suitable for any room.

A Colorful Stop Most Visitors Miss

Not every attraction appears in a guidebook.

The Palm Springs Graffiti Yard has evolved into an ever-changing outdoor gallery where local artists transform concrete walls and pillars into colorful works of art. You will find yourself pulling out the camera, for you will get some unique Instagrammable photos.

While it may not appeal to every traveler, I find it fascinating because no two visits are ever quite the same.

Explore the Desert's Outdoor Side

Many visitors come for the sunshine, and Palm Springs offers countless ways to enjoy it.

Desert Healthcare Wellness Park provides a beautiful outdoor setting with a quarter-mile walking path, exercise stations, meditation areas, and outstanding views of the San Jacinto Mountains. It's an inviting place to begin the day or unwind in the late afternoon.

For those who enjoy hiking, Palm Springs offers more than 60 miles of trails within city limits. Many are located on Agua Caliente tribal land and are exceptionally well-maintained.

One New Year's Day, my family and I spent the morning hiking through the canyons. I still remember the excitement of seeing my first desert oasis. It looked exactly as I had imagined—a cluster of palms thriving in the middle of an otherwise rugged landscape. Years later, it's still one of my favorite Palm Springs memories.

Take Advantage of Happy Hour

Locals have long known one of Palm Springs' best budget secrets: Happy Hour.

Many restaurants and bars offer generous specials for drinks and appetizers. Look for sandwich boards outside participating establishments listing daily times and offerings. If no sandwich board, ask; some of them even have Happy H

our all day.

It's common for residents to gather with friends in the late afternoon to enjoy discounted cocktails and share appetizers while escaping the day's heat. Many of them offer Happy Hour all day long.

The Real Luxury of Palm Springs

For me, the greatest luxury Palm Springs offers isn’t found at an expensive resort.

It's spending a winter afternoon beside a pool with a good book. It's listening to live music under the stars. It's discovering local art, strolling through VillageFest, or sharing stories with travelers you've just met.
