Palm Springs is fortunate to have venues that regularly attract internationally known performers. When Brad Paisley’s name appeared on the calendar, my country music roots—shaped long ago in Wisconsin—kicked in immediately.

Since I have a good reputation for helping cover the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, I used my own philosophy, It Doesn’t Hurt to Ask. I am pleased that the Agua Caliente Casino provided me with two comped tickets.

Dining at the Agua Caliente Casino 360 Sports Bar

I took a friend I knew would be up to see Brad Paisley. We met at my house, and there was no discussion about where we would eat before the performance– we had discovered the nachos at the Agua Caliente Casino 360 Sports Bar long ago.

Since the tables were filled when we arrived, and there was a long line, we opted to sit in the cushy chairs up front by the gigantic screens displaying every sport you can imagine. This meant we had to order at the bar and get our drinks, but the nachos were delivered to our seats.

We knew a half order of nachos would be more than enough for the two of us, but we were still astounded by the size of the portion brought to our chairs. Nearby people asked what we had ordered, and then we watched them promptly head to the bar to order theirs.

We were totally satisfied with our dining decision. Now it was time to head to The Show, steps away from the 360 Sports Bar.

Settling into our Seats

We knew this was a sold-out event, so it was fun to watch people in their western attire settle into their seats—an observation that every age group was represented, even younger children. The Standing Room Only area was packed.

The Brad Paisley Concert Began

The Brad Paisley tour is titled “Truck Still Works,” after his current radio single. The idea is to get in the truck, drive, and think back on romance and special memories. Throughout his performances, the backdrop depicted Paisley at his Junior Prom and during his scuba-diving explorations. The water theme was prevalent in many scenes, and Paisley's love of the water was evident.

Brad Paisley the Musician

There can be no quibble that he is considered one of the finest guitar players in the world. Watching his fingers dancing over the strings with incredible speed was mesmerizing. A stagehand effortlessly offered him a different guitar, often while he was in the midst of a song.

I've always enjoyed the song, Then We Danced.  When Brad Paisley started singing it, I was so surprised, because I didn’t know that was his song. While singing, he walked around the stage. A stagehand handed him a new guitar. Without hesitation, Paisley reached down into the audience and gave it to a 12-year-old boy. He kept singing and walked away.

Once the song was over, he returned to the broadly smiling young boy and asked if he knew how to play a guitar. He replied, “No.” Paisley said, “Well, young man, learn how to play this, and I can assure you when you ask, your prom date will say yes.” Then he continued the concert.

Brad Paisley Support Staff

He proudly introduced his eight-member band, saying most of them had been with him for 25 years. They know my secrets, and I know theirs. As we watched, we could tell they were totally in sync and anticipated his every move.

The concert wrapped with a single encore, capping a fast-paced, ninety-minute set. Brad Paisley blended musicianship with personal stories, giving the audience just enough—and leaving them wanting more, which may be the mark of a great live show.
